Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

Clean Water, Safe Sanitation, and Hygiene for Healthy Rural Lives

Access to clean water and proper sanitation is essential for health, dignity, and development. At Pradan Foundation, our WASH programme aims to ensure that every individual in rural and tribal Jharkhand has access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation, and hygiene education.

We believe that behavioral change, combined with infrastructure development, can break the cycle of disease, malnutrition, and poverty.

Our Goals

  • Ensure safe and sustainable access to clean drinking water

  • Prevent open defecation and promote safe sanitation

  • Encourage good hygiene practices through education and community engagement

  • Promote women’s dignity and safety through sanitation facilities

Water Supply Interventions

Many rural families depend on unsafe water sources, leading to water-borne diseases. Our interventions include:

  • Installation and renovation of deep tube wells

  • Construction of hand pumps and piped water systems

  • Promotion of rainwater harvesting for households and farms

  • Training on safe water handling: collection, storage, and treatment

  • Regular water quality testing to ensure safety standards

Sanitation Infrastructure

We support communities and schools with sustainable sanitation solutions such as:

  • Construction of individual household toilets (IHHLs)

  • Installation of school toilets and handwashing stations

  • Building community toilets in tribal and underserved hamlets

  • Encouraging local government to participate in Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) initiatives

Hygiene Promotion & Behavioral Change

Creating lasting impact requires changing behaviors and spreading awareness. We run large-scale hygiene education campaigns that cover:

  • Handwashing practices (especially after defecation and before meals)

  • Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) for adolescent girls and women

  • Safe handling of drinking water and food

  • Use and maintenance of sanitation infrastructure

  • Community-led total sanitation (CLTS) and hygiene clubs in schools

Community Involvement

We believe in a bottom-up approach, where local communities lead the change. Our WASH activities are community-owned and maintained through:

  • Formation of Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs)

  • Training of local masons and mechanics for maintenance

  • Regular community monitoring and awareness drives

Our Impact

  • Over 150+ deep tube wells installed or renovated

  • 1,000+ household toilets built in tribal villages

  • Hygiene education provided to 10,000+ individuals, including school children

  • 500+ adolescent girls trained on menstrual hygiene

  • Significant reduction in waterborne illnesses and open defecation in focus areas

Building Healthier Communities

Our WASH programme not only improves public health but also strengthens education outcomes, economic productivity, and women’s safety. At Pradan Foundation, we envision clean and healthy villages where water is safe, toilets are accessible, and hygiene is a shared responsibility.

Together, we are building a future where no one is left behind when it comes to basic human dignity.
